WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — ARIZONA sophomore left fielder Johnny Field has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and Wildcat junior right-handed pitcher Kurt Heyer has been named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for May 21-27, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
Field delivered a two-out walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday to give Arizona an 8-7 victory over Arizona State and earn a share of the Wildcats’ first conference championship since 1992. With that at-bat, the sophomore claimed the regular season Pac-12 batting title as his 6-for-13 (.462) weekend at the plate pushed his season batting average to .379. Along with his six hits, Field scored three runs in the series to give him a league-best 59 runs scored on the season. He also finished with the highest on-base percentage (.494) and the most walks (39).
This is Fields’ second career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and the 58th all-time selection for Arizona. Field’s first career weekly award came two weeks ago on May 14.
Heyer tossed his first shutout and sixth complete game of the season in Arizona’s 1-0 victory over Arizona State on Friday. The win, paired with an Oregon loss, moved the Wildcats into a tie for first place in the Pac-12. They went on to win a share of the Pac-12 Championship over the weekend. The junior notched his 11th win of the season and lowered his ERA to 2.03 as he scattered six hits and struck out two over the nine innings. Heyer limited the Sun Devils to just a 1-for-13 clip with runners on base in the game. The shutout marked the first time Arizona has blanked its archrival since 1989. It was the first time a game ended with a shutout between the schools in Tucson since UA's 4-0 victory on May 16, 1970.
This is Heyer’s sixth career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week selection and Arizona’s 50th all-time selection. Heyer has won three Pitcher of the Week honors this season, becoming the first to do so since UCLA’s Tyson Brummett in 2007.
