By the Pac-12 Conference
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Oregon State sophomore Michael Conforto has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week, while OSU senior left-handed pitcher Matt Boyd has been tabbed Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for March 11-17, the Conference office announced Tuesday. Both players received their respective honors for the second time this season.
Conforto led the Beavers to a 4-1 record last week, including a road sweep of No. 20 Arizona, a program first. The Woodinville, Wash. native batted .421 (8-for-19) with two home runs and four RBI. He slugged .737 for the week and had an on-base percentage of .500 as he added a walk and two hit by pitches. He hit safely in the last four games of the week, and tallied three multiple-hit games, two of which were against Arizona. Conforto leads the Beavers with a .380 average and paces the club with six home runs, 21 RBI and a .690 slugging percentage. His six home runs are the most in the Pac-12 this season, and his 21 RBI rank third. He also owns a league-leading .505 on-base percentage, having drawn 14 walks and five hit by pitches in 20 games.
This is Conforto’s second career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor–his second of the season–and Oregon State’s 62nd all-time selection.
Boyd made one appearance during the week, earning a win in the Beavers’ 6-2 victory over No. 20 Arizona Friday night in Tucson. The senior held the Wildcats to one earned run and two hits. Arizona came into the game with the second-highest team batting average in the Pac-12 but managed just one extra base hit and a .083 batting average in seven innings against the Mercer Island, Wash. product. Boyd walked just one batter and struck out six. He improved to 4-0 with the win and is now 15-1 lifetime at Oregon State, and his .938 winning percentage is the best mark in program history amongst players with 10 or more victories. Boyd sports a 1.59 ERA this season and has a WHIP of 0.97 in 34 innings.
This is Boyd’s second career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week selection–his second of the season– and Oregon State’s 68th all-time.
