WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Stanford forward Chiney Ogwumike was named Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and Colorado forward Arielle Roberson was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the week of Nov. 5-12. Ogwumike averaged 22.5 points and 12.0 rebounds and blocked four shots in wins over Fresno State and Santa Clara over the weekend, while Roberson scored 16 points and grabbed six boards and five steals in her collegiate debut.
Ogwumike, a junior from Cypress, Texas, opened the season with a 23-point, 17-rebound performance in Friday’s 72-61 win over Fresno State. She added four rebounds and a a pair of steals in a game that saw the Cardinal extend its national-best home winning streak to 80 games. She followed it up with a 22-point, seven-rebound effort in which she notched a game-high four steals while playing 27 minutes in Sunday’s 92-57 victory over Santa Clara. For the weekend, Ogwumike shot .679 from the field, going 9-14 on Friday and 10-14 on Sunday.
Roberson, a freshman from San Antonio, Texas, scored 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting in Colorado’s season-opening 70-65 win over Idaho on Sunday. She also collected six rebounds-- four of which came on the offensive glass-- and five steals. Her five steals were the most by a freshman in her Colorado debut since Brittany Spears, the program’s all-time leading scorer, swiped five in the 2007 opener. Roberson’s fifth steal came in the final minute with the Buffaloes clinging to a five-point lead.
This is Ogwumike’s third career player of the week honor and Stanford’s 85th all-time. Roberson is the first recipient of the Conference’s freshman of the week award. It is the first season the Pac-12 has selected a freshman of the week.
The fourth-ranked Cardinal take No. 1 Baylor on Friday, Nov. 15 in the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. Colorado returns to action with a road game against UMKC on Sunday, Nov. 18.
