WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Players of the Week for the week of Jan. 7-13. UCLA’s Atonye Nyingifa was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, while Oregon State’s Jamie Weisner was tabbed the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week.
Redshirt junior forward Atonye Nyingifa (Torrance, Calif.) led No. 14 UCLA to a pair of double-digit home wins over the Washington schools. The Bruins opened last week’s games with a 78-52 win over Washington State and then posted an 85-68 win over Washington. In both contests, Nyingifa led the Bruins in scoring with 17 points. She added a team-high seven rebounds, three steals and two assists against the Cougars, and eight rebounds, one assist and one steal against the Huskies. She has scored in double figures in a season-best five-consecutive games. For the week, Nyingifa averaged 17.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 assists per game, while also posting outstanding shooting percentages in the two contests, shooting a combined 73.7 percent from the field (14-for-19) and 85.7 percent (6-for-7) from the free throw line.
Guard Jamie Weisner (Clarkston, Wash.) continued her strong start to Pac-12 play in the Beavers’ two games in Arizona over the weekend. On Friday, Weisner helped OSU to its first conference win of the year with her second double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds against Arizona. She is the first Oregon State freshman to have multiple double-doubles in a season since 2009-10. Against Arizona State on Sunday, Weisner scored in double figures for the fourth-straight game, scoring 10 points to go along with three assists and two steals. In four conference games so far this season, the freshman is averaging 15.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.
It is Nyingifa’s first-career player of the week honor and UCLA’s 47th all-time. It is Weisner’s first freshman weekly nod this season.
UCLA travels to the Bay Area to take on a pair of top-10 foes in No. 6 Stanford on Friday, Jan. 18 and No. 7 California on Sunday, Jan. 20. The game against the Cardinal will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks, while Sunday’s clash will be televised on ESPNU. The Beavers take on traditional rival Oregon twice this week - first on Tuesday, Jan. 18 then on Sunday. Both of those games will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
