By the Pac-12 Conference
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Players of the Week for the week of Jan. 21-27. Stanford’s Chiney Ogwumike was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, while Washington’s Talia Walton was tabbed the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week. It is Ogwumike’s fourth player of the week selection and Walton’s second freshman of the week nod this season.
Junior forward Chiney Ogwumike paced then-No. 6/6 Stanford’s weekend sweep of Utah and No. 20/23 Colorado, shooting 61.5 percent from the field while averaging 21.5 points and 12.5 rebounds. The Cypress, Texas, native posted her Pac-12-leading 14th and 15th double-doubles, and turned in a pair of 20-point performances in the wins. On Friday night against the Utes, Ogwumike scored 23 points with 12 rebounds and a pair of blocks as the Cardinal won, 65-44. She followed up with a 20-point, 12-rebound effort in Sunday’s 69-56 win over then-No. 20/23 Colorado. Ogwumike also added three blocked shots against the Buffs to boost her weekend total to five. Ogwumike is the Pac-12’s leading scorer, averaging 22.0 points per game, and she ranks second in the Conference with 12.0 rebounds per game.
Redshirt-freshman Talia Walton (Federal Way, Wash.) helped the Huskies to a sweep of the Oregon schools over the weekend. She had double-doubles in both games, leading UW to a pair of victories without Jazmine Davis, their leading scorer and the 2012 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. Walton averaged 17.5 points and 12 rebounds per game, while also chipping in five steals and three blocks. She was instrumental in the second half against Oregon, scoring 13 of her 18 points in that frame. She also grabbed a game-high 13 boards. She opened the weekend with 17-point, 11-rebound effort in the win over Oregon State.
It is Ogwumike’s seventh-career player of the week honor and Stanford’s 88th all-time.
Ranked fourth in the country this week, the Cardinal hits the road after a wrapping up a five-game homestand. The Cardinal heads to Eugene to take on Oregon on Friday, Feb. 1 and closes out the weekend on Sunday, Feb. 3 at Oregon State. Both games will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
