WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Players of the Week for the final week of the regular season dated Feb. 25- March 3. Stanford's Chiney Ogwumike was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week for a league-record sixth time, while Colorado’s Arielle Roberson was tabbed the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week and fifth time overall.
Junior Chiney Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas) had another stellar week en route to earning her Pac-12 single-season record sixth weekly honor. She breaks the record set by USC’s Cheri Nelson, who earned the honor five times during the 1987-88 season. Ogwumike led Stanford to a share of its 13th-straight Pac-12 title and 22nd overall this past weekend, shooting 71.9 percent from the floor while averaging 26.0 points and 13.0 rebounds in the Cardinal’s sweep of Washington and Washington State. She put up 24 points and 13 rebounds with three blocks in the 71-36 win over the Huskies, then followed up with another 13 rebounds against WSU to set a new Pac-12 and Stanford single-season rebounding record, eclipsing older sister Nnemkadi Ogwumike’s three-year-old mark of 376. Ogwumike, who now has 381 rebounds this season, also added 28 points and a pair of blocks in the 72-50 win.
Arielle Roberson (San Antonio, Texas) helped Colorado secure a fourth-place finish in the Pac-12 final standings, averaging 13 points and 7.5 rebounds as the Buffaloes claimed a pair of road wins against the Oregon schools. She had a game-high 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field against UO, including a perfect 2-of-2 from 3-point range. She also recorded four rebounds, one block and a steal. Roberson turned in her second-career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the come-from-behind win at OSU. She hit 6-of-7 from the free throw line, including a pair of free throws with six seconds left in overtime that provided the final margin.
It is Ogwumike’s ninth-career weekly honor, which ties the Pac-12 record. Former Stanford standouts Jayne Appel (2007-10) and Candice Wiggins (2005-08) also won the weekly honor nine times in their careers. It is also Stanford’s 90th all-time weekly recognition.
All league teams are headed to the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Tournament this week. The event is being held in Seattle for the first time ever. Games will be played at KeyArena, Thursday-Sunday, March 7-10. Tickets are still available to be purchased at Pac-12.com/tickets. Additionally, every game of the tournament will be nationally televised, a first for the league. The first three rounds will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks and the championship game will be televised on ESPN2.
