AROUND THE PAC-12
TRADITIONAL RIVARIES: The final weekend of the regular season presents several storied rivalries.
Apple Cup: Washington vs. Washington State. It’s the 105th meeting. The first meeting between these two schools occured in 1900 and resulted in a 5-5 tie. Originally called the Governor’s Trophy, the game was renamed the Apple Cup in 1962. Washington owns a 67-31-6 advantage.
Territorial Cup: Arizona vs. Arizona State. The Territorial Cup is the oldest trophy for a rivalry game in America. On Thanksgiving Day in 1899, then Arizona Terriotrial Normal School defeated Arizona 11-2. The Territorial Cup was lost for a time, but was discovered several years ago in the basement of a church that was being demolished. It’s the 86th meeting with Arizona leading the series, 47-37-1.
Civil War: Oregon vs. Oregon State. The 116th meeting and seventh-oldest rivalry in college football. Oregon State won the first meeting in 1894 by the score of 12-0. After winning the last four meetings, Oregon now holds a 59-46-10 edge.
Shillelagh: USC vs. Notre Dame. The winner of this intersectional rivalry claims the jeweled shillelagh. A shillelagh is a Gaelic war club made of oak or blackthorn saplings from Ireland. The shillelagh has ruby-adorned Trojan heads with the year and game score representing USC victories, while emerald-studded shamrocks stand for Notre Dame wins. It’s the 84th meeting, with Notre Dame holding a 43-35-5.
