WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-12 Conference office announced today the Pac-12 women’s gymnastics weekly honors for the week of Dec. 31- Jan. 6. UCLA’s Vanessa Zamarripa was named the Gymnast of the Week, STANFORD’s Nicole Dayton was voted Specialist of the Week, and UCLA’s Sophina DeJesus was selected as the Freshman/Newcomer of the week.
Zamarripa, a native of O’Fallon, Ill., won both beam and floor en route to winning the all-around with a 39.475. She led second-ranked UCLA to a season-opening victory over Southern Utah 196.150-194.875. The senior ended the night on floor earning a career-high 9.975. On beam, Zamarripa tied for first with Southern Utah’s Alyssa Click, scoring a 9.875. She placed second on vault with a 9.825 and rounded out her all-around score with a 9.80 on bars. UCLA earned a 49.3 on bars, the highest score on the event in the nation this weekend.
The Cardinal senior captain, Dayton, tallied a 9.950 on vault and placed first to help lead Stanford to its season opening win at the NorCal Quad meet hosted by San Jose. Dayton’s score matched her career-best on the event, which she scored during the 2012 NCAA Super Six. Stanford posted a 195.425 on the night beating San Jose State (192.875), UC Davis (191.400) and Sacramento State (191.100).
In her collegiate debut, Sophina DeJesus scored a 9.8 or better on all three events in which she competed. On her first routine of the night, DeJesus tallied a 9.9 on bars to tie for first with teammate Lichelle Wong. In addition, DeJesus earned a 9.8 on beam to tie for third, as well as, a 9.825 on floor, which was good enough for fifth place. UCLA’s team score on floor of 49.475 ranks second in the nation after the first week of competition.
This is Zamarripa’s sixth Gymnast of the Week honor and UCLA’s 42nd all-time. This is Dayton’s first Specialist of the Week honor and Stanford’s sixth all-time. It is DeJesus’ first freshman of the week honor.
Gymnast of the Week has been selected every week of the season since 2001. The Specialist of the Week award was added in 2008. It is the first year for Freshman/Newcomer of the Week.
The Bruins next host UTAH on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. PT. The meet will be broadcasted on the Pac-12 Networks. The Cardinal travels to ARIZONA on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 4 p.m. MT where they will also face Illinois and San Jose State.
