WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Arizona sophomore Kevin Cordes and California freshman Elizabeth Pelton have been named Pac-12 Swimmers of the Month for November.
Cordes won the 200 breast at the USA Swimming AT&T Winter National Championships in record-setting fashion, finishing with a time of 1:50.73. With the effort, he set an NCAA and American record and became the first male ever to swim a sub-1:51 in the event. In the 100 breast, he broke the American record with a time of 51.10 and won gold in the event. He was also a member of Arizona’s 4x400 and 4x200 medley relay teams that set meet records, finishing with times of 3:05.69 and 1:24.84, respectively.
Pelton helped the Golden Bears to dual-meet victories over No. 23 Wisconsin and No. 7 Texas and a team title in the Arena Invitational. She also turned in the fastest times in the nation in the 200 IM (1:53.39) and the 400 medley relay (3:29.86) at the Georgia Invitational. At the Arena Invitational, Pelton won the 200 back (1:54.43), took second in the 200 IM (1:57.11), finished fourth in the 100 back (54.12), swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:18.91), anchored the winning 400 medley relay (3:37.64) and placed second with Cal’s 800-free relay (7:12.59). She won the 100 back (53.46), 100 free (50.33) and 500 free (4:51.48) against Wisconsin and followed up with victories in the 400 IM (4:09.89), 200 free (1:46.56), 200 back (1:54.55, a pool record) and the 400 medley relay (3:36.60) against Texas.
This is Cordes’ second Swimmer of the Month award and Arizona’s seventh all-time. On the women’s side, this is Pelton’s first career monthly award and the 10th for the Bears, the most in the Conference.
