WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Arizona sophomore Kevin Cordes and USC freshman Jasmine Tosky have been named Pac-12 Swimmers of the Month for December, the Conference office announced Tuesday.
Cordes won a pair of medals--a gold and a bronze--at the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. He helped the U.S. to a gold medal in the 4x100m medley relay. Cordes (57.15) and teammates Matt Grevers (50.00), Tom Shields (48.66) and Ryan Lochte (45.22), turned in a total time of 3:21.03 to claim the victory. Earlier in the competition, Cordes earned a bronze medal in the 100 breast with a time of 57.83. The bronze medal was his first in international competition.
Tosky helped the USC women to a first-place finish in the 2012 U.S. Winter Nationals. She won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:54.38 and was a member of the Trojans’ winning 800 free relay team (7:05.69). She also took fifth in the 100 butterfly, sixth in the 200 IM and helped the 400 medley relay team to a second-place finish with a season-best time of 3:32.20, and her 200 free relay team team took third place with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:29.47. Tosky also participated in the 2012 FINA Short Course World Championships, where she swam the first leg in the preliminary of the 800 meter free relay for a U.S. squad that won the gold medal. She also placed ninth in the 200 meter butterfly, missing the finals by a mere 0.38 of a second.
This is Cordes’ second straight and third-career Swimmer of the Month award and Arizona’s eighth all-time. On the women’s side, this is Tosky’s first career monthly award and the 9th for the Trojans.
