WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Utah sophomore Slim Hamza and USC sophomore Sabrina Santamaria have been named Pac-12 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week for January 14-20, the Conference Office announced Tuesday.
Hamza was unbeaten in Utah’s opening-weekend dual matches, helping the Utes to victories over Weber State and Idaho State. He defeated Weber State’s Oliver Good in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 in singles play and teamed up with junior Devin Lane to dispatch the Wildcats’ top doubles pairing (Todd Fought and Sanjay Goswami), 8-2. Against Idaho State, Hamza swept his singles opponent--Krzysztof Stempien-- with set scores of 6-4, 6-2. In doubles play, Hamza and Lane posted an 8-3 victory over Idaho State’s Nate Gross and Charles Norman, and Utah took the match, 6-1.
Santamaria collected two championships on Sunday at the Freeman Memorial Women’s Tennis Championships. Santamaria and teammate Kaitlyn Christian, the nation’s top-ranked doubles team, worked through teams from UNLV, North Carolina and UCLA to claim their first doubles title of 2013. Later that day, Santamaria took to the singles court as the No. 4 seed in the draw. Aside from a three-set battle in the quarterfinals against Stanford’s Ellen Tsay, No. 17 Santamaria managed straight-set wins down the line, including a 6-0, 6-2 upset of No. 2 Krista Hardebeck of Stanford in the semifinals. She made quick work of No. 11 Gina Suarez-Malaguti of North Carolina in the final (6-0, 6-1) to win the Freeman Memorial singles title.
Men’s: Campbell Johnson, California; Adrien Puget, UCLA.
Women’s: Leighann Sahagun, Arizona State; Zsofi Susanyi, California; Carla Manzi Tenorio, Colorado; Robin Anderson, UCLA.
