Freshman Play Well at Thunderbird Invitational

Championship Sunday concluded at the Arizona State/Thunderbirds Invitational with four singles draws (main draw, consolation draw, second round losers consolation draw, first round losers consolation draw) and two doubles (main, consolation). Teams that competed in the three-day Invitational were Arizona State, Arizona, California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, San Diego, Southern California and Texas.
Arizona State bolstered some heavy competition this past weekend with four of ASU's women making it to the single's quarterfinals, and in doubles, Arizona State's tandem of Mhairi Brown and Celena McCoury knocked of the second and third-seeded teams en route to the doubles championship.
Top-seeded Ipek Senoglu of Pepperdine breezed her way through the tournament's main draw by not dropping a single set. In the finals against second-seeded Vladka Uhlirova of Texas, Ipek was up 5-0 in the first set before Uhlirova was forced to retire due to wrist and hand cramps.
Cal's tandem of Christina Fusano/Nicole Havlicek were defeated in the quarterfinal consolation match by Pepperdine's Kurz/Vernaz 8-3, while Cal's other duo of Sekita Grant/Jieun Jacobs were defeated in the semifinals of the doubles consolation by default due to injury.
Freshman Bear Jieun Jacobs grabbed three wins this weekend defeating Laresa Marino (UA) 4-6,6-2,6-1 in the first round of competition and defeating Catherine Heppell of USD twice, once in the quarterfinals and then knocking her out again in the second round consolation draw semifinals (6-3,6-4, 6-3,6-2, respectively). The freshman lost in the finals, however, to Kaysie Smashey (Texas) after a strong first set 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Nicole Havlicek got off to a slow start, losing to Michelle Gough (UA) in the first round 6-2, 6-3. However, the freshman from Ontario, Canada went on to win the finals in the first round consolation draw by defeating USC's Bernadette Bayani in the semifinals and USD's Siri Fomsgaard in the finals (6-4, 7-5, 7-5, 6-3, respectively).
The three remaining Cal women in singles competition mangaged to grab one win apiece. Senior Lisa Swierniak defeated Darian Chappell (UCI) 6-2, 6-3, Freshman Sekita Grant defeated Charlotte Vernaz (Pepp) by default-injury, and Senior Christina Fusano defeated USD's Siri Fomsgaard 6-3, 7-6(2) in the first round of singles main draw.
