SERIES NOTES FOR THE GAMES OF SEP 16:

CALIFORNIA (1-0) at ILLINOIS (2-0) - 11:00 CDT/9:00 PDT - ESPN - The Series: California and Illinois have met six times with the Illini leading the series 5-1. Illinois won the first five meetings with Cal taking the most recent in 1974 at Champaign. Overall at Champaign, Illinois leads 2-1. . . . Last Meeting: California and Illinois last met in 1974 at Campaign with the Golden Bears pulling a 31-14 upset of the No. 14-ranked Illini. . . . Coaching Note: Illinois coach Ron Turner is a Bay Area native from Martinez, Calif., who attended University of the Pacific and was head coach at San Jose State in 1992. Among his stops as an assistant coach were Pac-10 stints at Arizona (1978-80), USC (1985-87) and Stanford (1989-91).

MICHIGAN (2-0) at UCLA (2-0) - 12:30 PDT - ABC - The Series: UCLA and Michigan have met 10 times with the Wolverines owning the series by a count of 8-2. Michigan has won the last three meetings. While Michigan and UCLA are among the most frequent participants in the Rose Bowl Game with 29 appearances between them, they have only faced off in that New Year's Day Classic once with UCLA winning the 1983 Rose Bowl 24-14. In fact, both of UCLA's wins against Michigan came in that season as the Bruins had defeated the Wolverines earlier in the 1982 season before dispatching them again in the 1983 Rose Bowl Game. . . . Last Meeting: UCLA and Michigan last met in 1996 at Ann Arbor with the No. 6-ranked Wolverines rolling over the Bruins 38-9 in front of 106,011 fans. Michigan outgained UCLA 559-170 and had a 25-7 edge in first downs. The Wolverine defense shut down the Bruin offense, which was led by QB Cade McNown and RB Skip Hicks. UCLA's offense never got in the end zone, was limited to 108 yards rushing and 62 yards passing and converted just one of 14 third-down conversion attempts.

WASHINGTON (2-0) at COLORADO (0-2)- 1:30 MDT/12:30 PDT - ABC - The Series: Rick Neuheisel makes his return to Colorado where he compiled at 40-19 record in four years as head coach from 1995-98. Washington and Colorado have met 10 times with the Buffs holding a slim 5-4-1 series edge. Washington leads 2-1 in the three previous games played at Colorado. . . . Last Year: Rick Neuheisel got his first win as Washington's coach at the expense of his old school as UW topped Colorado, 31-24, at Seattle last year. The game marked the 600th win in Husky history. UW QB Marques Tuiasosopo connected on two fourth-quarter TD passes to give the Huskies the lead and CB Anthony Vontoure preserved it with an endzone interception with 1:07 remaining. Washington outgained Colorado 415-289 and featured a balanced 205 yards rushing, 210 yards passing.

IDAHO (0-2) at OREGON (1-1) - 3:30 PDT - The Series: Oregon and Idaho have met 56 times dating back to 1901, but just once since 1971. Most of those games came as fellow members of the Pacific Coast Conference from 1922-58. The Ducks lead the series by a lopsided 49-3-4. UO leads 31-1-3 in games played in Oregon, 28-1-2 in games played in Eugene and 5-0 in games played at Autzen Stadium. The Ducks have won the last 20 games between the two teams with the last Vandal victory coming in 1950 at Moscow (14-0). Idaho has not won at Eugene since 1925 (6-0). . . . Last Meeting: Oregon and Idaho last met in 1990 at Eugene with the Ducks rolling to a 55-23 win. Oregon overpowered Idaho with 398 yards rushing.

WASHINGTON STATE (0-1) at UTAH (0-2) - 6:00 MDT/5:00 PDT - The Series: Washington State and Utah have met nine times with the Utes holding a slim 5-4 series edge. The teams have split four previous meetings at Salt Lake City. . . . Last Year: Washington State and Utah opened the season at Pullman with the Utes handing the Cougars a 27-7 defeat that marked the first WSU home loss to a non-conference opponent since 1991. Utah forced five WSU turnovers to set the tone of the game. . . . Coaching Note: Washington State coach Mike Price spent eight years in Utah as the head coach at Weber State from 1981-88 prior to taking over at WSU.

SAN DIEGO STATE (0-2) at ARIZONA (1-1) - 7:00 MST/PDT -The Series: Arizona and San Diego State have met 13 times with the Wildcats leading the series 8-5. UA has won the last two meetings. In eight previous meetings at Tucson, the Cats lead 6-2. . . . Last Meeting: Arizona and San Diego State met at San Diego in 1998 with the No. 16-ranked Wildcats taking a 35-16 decision. Arizona exploded for 28 points over a 15 minute span in the first half to put the game away. The stats were close with SDSU holding a slight 357-354 edge in total offense, but the Wildcat defense forced six Aztec turnovers to thwart any San Diego hopes. Aztec TB Larry Ned led all rushers with 144 yards and a TD. . . . Coaching Note: San Diego State is coached by former USC head coach Ted Tollner, who led the Trojans to a 26-20-1 record from 1983-86, including a win in the 1985 Rose Bowl. Tollner was 2-0 against Arizona while at USC.

COLORADO STATE (2-0) at ARIZONA STATE (1-0) - 7:00 MST - The Series: Arizona State and Colorado State have met 20 times with the Sun Devils dominating the series 19-1, including the last four. CSU's only win in the series came at Fort Collins in 1977 (25-14). The Rams have never won at Tempe as ASU is a perfect 15-0 at home. . . . Last Meeting: Arizona State and Colorado State last met in 1990 at Tempe with the Sun Devils defeating the Rams of Earle Bruce 31-20. The teams battled fairly evenly with ASU just edging CSU in total offense 399-393. But Devil QB Paul Justin passed for 274 yards and two TDs and ASU FS Nathan LaDuke returned an interception 92 yards for a score to put the game away for the Sun Devils.

TEXAS (1-0) at STANFORD (1-1) - 7:15 MST - FOX Sports Net - The Series: Stanford and Texas have met just three times with the Longhorns leading the series 2-1. Texas has made just one previous trip to Stanford, defeating the Cardinal 38-34 in 1985. . . . Last Year: Stanford and Texas opened the season in Austin and the No. 16-ranked Longhorns rolled over the Cardinal by a 69-17 count. It was the worst season-opening loss in Stanford history and the second-worst defeat ever. Texas gained 558 yards in total offense with no turnovers as QB Major Applewhite passed for 353 yards and three TDs.
