Women's Basketball Ranked 13th in Street & Smith's Preseason Poll
Oct. 10, 2000
STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford University women's basketball team has been tabbed as the 13th-ranked team in the nation according to the 2000-01 Street & Smith's Magazine Preseason Poll.
The Cardinal's ranking is the highest of any team in the Pacific-10 Conference or the West Coast. The only other Pac-10 team in the top 25 is defending conference champion Oregon at #22. Including Oregon, Stanford will take on four of the schools ranked in the top 25. The Cardinal will meet three of them on the same road swing in December, which takes it to #2 Tennessee (Dec. 17), #4 Purdue (Dec. 19) and #15 Oklahoma (Dec. 27).
Stanford, which opens the regular season on Nov. 17 against Saint Mary's, returns eight letterwinners and four starters from last year's squad that went 21-9 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 13th consecutive year. The Cardinal advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and also finished tied for second in the Pac-10 with a 13-5 conference mark.
The Cardinal returns 1999-2000 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Jamie Carey (Thornton, CO/Horizon HS), who set a Stanford single season record for 3-pointers in a season (81), and ranked in the top 15 in the country in both 3-pointers per game (12th, 2.8) and 3-point percentage (14th, .455).
Stanford also returns two 1999-2000 Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 selections in senior center Carolyn Moos (Wayzata, MN/Blake School), who led the team in points (12.4) and rebounds per game (5.5) a year ago, and junior Lauren St. Clair (Philadelphia, PA/Mount St. Joseph Academy) who ranked ninth in the nation in 3-point percentage at .466.
The Cardinal also adds a talented five-player recruiting class, which was ranked among the best in the country. The class is highlighted by 6-foot-2 forward Nicole Powell (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe HS), who was the leading rebounder for the gold-medal winning USA Basketball Women's Junior World Championship Qualifying Team this summer.
Stanford begins practice for the 2000-01 campaign this Saturday from 7:45 a.m.-10:45 a.m. at Maples Pavilion. The team will then practice daily from 12:45-3:45 p.m. at Maples in preparation for a Nov. 9th home exhibition game against a team from Latvia and the Nov. 17th season opener at Saint Mary's. Stanford opens its 15-game regular season home schedule against Santa Clara on Monday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
