Oct. 11, 2000
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - In a preseason poll announced on Wednesday, the University of Arizona women's basketball team has been picked by the Pac-10 Conference coaches to finish fourth in the league race this year.
With four returning starters from last year's NCAA tournament team, Stanford has been tabbed by the coaches as the team to beat in the 2000-2001 season. The Cardinal garnered nine first-place votes in the preseason poll, and Oregon earned one first-place vote.
Arizona tied the Cardinal for second place in the conference with a 13-5 league record last season, while Oregon captured its second straight Pac-10 title. The Wildcats finished 25-7 overall and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Mideast Regional last season.
In each of the three previous years, Arizona has equalled or bettered the finish predicted by the league's coaches.Last year, the Cats were selected to finish fourth, then went on to earn a tie for second place.
This is the first time that Stanford has been tabbed by the coaches as the conference preseason favorite since the poll's inception in 1998. For more information, check out the Pac-10's web site at www.pac-10.org.
