Cal Volleyball Defeats William & Mary, 3-1

BERKELEY, CA - The University of California women's volleyball team (9-7) topped visiting William & Mary (9-8), 3-1 (16-14, 13-15, 15-11, 15-7), Friday night at the RSF Fieldhouse.
The Bears were led by a team-high 20 kills and 20 digs by senior outside hitter Alicia Perry. Perry also had a career-high six total blocks with two block solos and four block assists. Freshman outside hitter Gabrielle Abernathy added 13 kills, sophomore Reena Pardiwala 12 kills and sophomore Leah Young 10 kills. Freshman Ashleigh Turner had three service aces. Tara Tobias paced William & Mary with 17 kills.
Cal had to make a big comeback to capture game one. The Bears were down 8-1 to the Tribe before mounting a rally to tie the game, 11-11. Cal then took control when William & Mary hit wide twice, Perry had a solo block and Perry and Pardiwala had block assists to take a 14-11 lead. The Bears were able to hold on an win 16-14.
Cal let game two slip away after holding a 12-10 lead on an ace by Turner. The Tribe were able to tie the game, 13-13, and then won 15-13 when Kerri-Ann Grosso had a service ace and Abernathy's kill attempt went into the net.
In game three, the Bears tied the contest 11-11 on a kill by Perry and then went on a 4-0 run with the help of a kill by Pardiwala, a kill by Young and wide hit by William & Mary to win 15-11. The fourth game was the easiest for Cal as it jumped out to a 10-5 lead on block assists by Turner and Young. The Bears then cruised to 15-7 victory with the help of a solo block by Turner, a kill by Perry, a block by Perry and finally a service ace by sophomore Alyssa Currier.
The Bears will next return to Pac-10 play, traveling to USC, Thursday, Oct. 19 for a 6 p.m. match and UCLA, Friday, Oct. 20 for a 7 p.m. match.
