Women's Soccer Shuts Out Oregon, 3-0
Oct. 13, 2000
LOS ANGELES -- Freshman Jessica Edwards (Mesa, AZ/Dobson HS), senior Isabelle Harvey (Cap-Rouge, Quebec, Canada) and junior Brittany Savelkoul (Seal Beach/Los Alamitos HS) tallied second-half goals Friday as the No. 10 USC Trojans defeated the Oregon Ducks, 3-0, at McAlister Field. With the win, the Trojans improve to 9-1-2 on the season and 1-0-1 in Pac-10 play while the Ducks fall to 4-10 overall, 1-2 in Pac-10 play.
Junior goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandes (San Jose/Presentation HS) needed only two saves to record her first shutout of the season and sixth in her career. Oregon goalkeeper Sarah Peters made eight saves in a losing cause for the Ducks.
The play in the first half was even between both teams before Edwards opened the scoring at 62:41, thanks to an assist from sophomore Kim Abbamonto (Mission Viejo/Capistrano Valley HS). Edwards chipped a shot over Peters' head for her team-leading sixth goal of the season and her third in as many games.
Harvey recorded her goal at 70:23 on a breakaway while Savelkoul scored at close range at 76:21 to complete the scoring.
'We didn't play with a lot of desire in the first half, but the kids stepped it up in the second half,' said USC Head Coach Jim Millinder. 'We did a better job of executing and finishing our chances. We thought we may have a letdown after last week's game against UCLA, we told our players that there is no easy game in the Pac-10 Conference.'
'Brittany really needed that goal because she has been working hard lately. Isabelle had a great run on her goal and Jessica was able to finish after being snake-bitten in the first half.'
USC is now 5-0 all-time against Oregon.
The Trojans will host Oregon State on Sunday (Oct. 15) at 1 p.m. The game also has been moved to McAlister Field.
