Cal Men Finish Second, Cal Women Fourth at Cal Poly Invitational
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - With a full line-up on both the men and women's squads, Cal ran a top-notch race. The California men's cross-country team had a strong finish with Girmay Guangul leading the pack at the Cal Poly Invitational. The Bears finished second with 50 points while Cal Poly finished first with a total of 25 points. With an increase in depth, the women Bears showed tremendous improvement with a fourth-place finish, scoring 117 points. Fila Track West took first with 31 points.
Once again, Girmay Guangal lead the Bears with a second-place finish (26:07). Also contending for the seven-spots on the Pac-10 Championship team for Cal was Martin Conrad (10th, 27:16), Corey Creasey (11th, 27:17), Chris Coffee (16th, 27:29), John Collins (17th, 27:36), Jonathan Balzer (21st, 27:46), and Nick Martin (29th, 28:03).
On the women's side, Marielle Schlueter and Erin Belger led the Bears with 17th-place and 18th-place finishes, 19:05 and 19:13 respectively. Also in contention for the seven-spots for the Pac-10 Championships on the women's side were Kim Ramirez (30th, 19:49), Tiffany Hansen (32nd, 19:50), Lina Biber-Ferro (58th, 20:59), Dawn Beahm (63rd, 21:14), and Martina Patella (77th, 22:24).
The Bears will not be competing next weekend. They will be training for the Pac-10 Championships held on October 28th.
