Cal-UCLA Postgame Quotes
Oct. 14, 2000
BERKELEY - Below are postgame quotes from player and coaches following Cal's win over UCLA.
California Head Coach Tom Holmoe Quotes:
'That was fun. We needed that. I'm proud of the boys. They've had a lot of people against them and the team for quite a few weeks. I knew they'd practiced well, and they came out in warm-ups a little different. I could sense they had a great feel for the game and they played very well.'
'We have a way of making things tight. The ball bounced crazy and everything didn't go our way. When they (UCLA) tied it up, I know a lot of people were probably saying 'oops, here we go again.' But we came through.'
On whether this a redemption game:
'I don't really want to go that way. This was one game and I'm proud of us, and maybe this will be the catalyst of more good offensive games. But I don't have any resentment, we haven't played that well. We have a huge game in Washington next week and I don't want to be a one-trick pony.'
On UCLA's comeback:
'They've won all of their games this year basically by coming from behind and I knew that. You don't want to think too much about it when they start coming back. When they came back and tied it up, that didn't bode well for us, but we stopped them.'
Cal Player Quotes
Jacob Waasdorp, Nose Tackle
'A sense of pride first time in a long time, a sense of pride as a team. Not offense, not defense, or special teams, just as Cal Bears.' It's definitely a big win, when you lose four in a row and you win a big game, it's always a big win. You know, it UCLA, I think their ranked, I don't even know, but yeah, it is a spring board, but you've got to know how to utilize it.'
Kyle Boller, QB
On the Victory and the fan reaction after the game:
'This is crazy, I mean, I never imagined the fans running down the field. Going through what we went through, it's indescribable, it's a lot of fun.'
On the offense and playing UCLA today:
'I mean, there was a lot of plays where we were really close before. I think today, the guys put it together. They played with their heart. And they knew that we could beat UCLA, knowing that they were a good football team, but we knew inside that we could beat them.'
Joe Igber, RB
On the playing calling for the tailbacks against UCLA:
'I had a feeling UCLA was going to do good on the run this week, so coach put a few passing routes in there. We didn't run every play that he put in for the tailbacks so I just knew if I wasn't going to get it done on the ground, we had to move the ball some how, so I just did what I could.'
UCLA Head Coach Bob Toledo Quotes:
'First of all, you have to give Cal credit. They played very inspired today. They played with a lot of emotion and intensity. We gave them life early in the game and they took advantage of it.'
'Then we got within 21-14 at the half and I thought we were in good shape. But, we started the second half with an interception and that hurt us. They hurt us all day with the big play. We couldn't establish a running game and on defense a big key for Cal was that they made a lot of big third down plays.'
'Kyle Boller played the best game of the year and probably the best game of his career today. And, (Joe) Igber ran hard. It just goes to show you that on any given Saturday anyone can beat anyone in this conference. All the teams in this conference are good.'
'This is the first overtime game that we have lost. Before this we were 3-0 in overtime games. We got into overtime I thought we were in pretty good shape. But, you can only come from behind so many times before it comes back to haunt you. And, it got us today.'
UCLA Player Quotes
QB Cory Paus ~
'We played well enough to win. We didn't run the ball well but we were in a position to win. I felt like we were ready to play. I was pretty excited when we got it to overtime. We were fighting back the whole game.'
On the Cal defense:
'Nine guys in the box made us throw the ball. They came up with some big plays when they needed to. I had a couple of bad throws I shouldn't have made. If I didn't throw the interception they wouldn't have gotten the touchdown and we would've won the game.'
On DE Andre Carter:
'He's a great player.'
SE Brian Poli-Dixon ~
'We showed we could move the ball when we stuck to our assignments. We shot ourselves in the foot and got behind the eight ball.'
On the Cal defense:
'I didn't think that it was that tough. I think we play better defense against ourselves than anyone else.'
On UCLA's 1-2 conference record:
'It is very frustrating. This is not at all where we want to be. We have to go back Monday and work on the fundamentals.'
