Top-ranked Stanford Women's Cross Country Team Finishes Second At Pre-NCAA Meet

Ames, Ia - Brigham Young University, ranked #3 in the nation and the defending NCAA champion, upset top-ranked Stanford University to win the Iowa State Memorial Cross Country Classic/Pre-NCAA Meet on Saturday.

BYU tallied 83 points compared to Stanford with 104. Sixteen of the nation's top 25 women's teams competed.

Elena Villarreal was Stanford's top runner in 13th place with a time of 21:37.4 over 6,000 meters.

The Stanford men's team, also ranked #1 in the nation, placed third at the Iowa State meet with 255 points. Third-ranked Colorado finished first with 64 points, while tenth-ranked Northern Arizona finished second with 255 points. Thirteen of the top 25 men's team competed.

Thomas Murley and Jonathon Riley finished 2-3 in the 10,000 meter race for Stanford with times of 30:48.8 and 30:49.6, respectively.

Today's meet was a preview of the national competition at the upcoming NCAA Cross Country Championships in Ames on Nov. 20.
