Oct. 14, 2000

SEATTLE - Playing its second, four-game match in as many days, the Washington Huskies, a day after downing Oregon, fell to the Oregon State Beavers 15-6, 15-5, 13-15, 15-3, Saturday in Pac-10 volleyball action at the Hec Edmundson Pavilion Addition. The Huskies fell to 5-11 overall and 1-8 in conference play, while the Beavers moved to 13-6 overall and 5-4 in the Pac-10.

The UW was led offensively for the second straight night by junior quick hitter Lisa Underhill's (Vista, Calif.) 13 kills, while junior setter Britni Churnside (Eugene, Ore.) tallied her fourth straight double-double, recording 38 assists and a team-high 11 digs. Washington sophomores Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.) and Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) both reached double-figure kill totals with 11 and freshman Kara Bjorklund (Olympia, Wash.) had five blocks.

The Huskies were unable to get their passing game on track for most of the contest. The Beavers opened the match by scoring 14 straight points before the Huskies managed their first point on a service ace. Washington kept Oregon State from wrapping up the game-one win by scoring six unanswered points before finally falling, 15-6.

After a 15-5 game-two win for the Beavers, the Huskies kept game three close, tying the score five times before a Beaver hitting error broke a 13-13 tie to give the UW their first game point. After one sideout, the Huskies converted on their second opportunity as a Bjorklund kill kept Oregon State from the sweep with a 15-13 win.

The match returned to the Beavers' favor as coach Nancy Somera's squad broke the game open at 7-3 by scoring eight unanswered points to win the game, 15-3, and the match.

Gina Schmidt's 32 kills led Oregon State, while setter Brandi Bonnarens had 80 assists.

The Huskies head to Arizona and Arizona State next weekend as Pac-10 Conference play continues.
