Men's Soccer Finds Winning Ways Again, Beats USF 1-0
Oct. 15, 2000
CORVALLIS, Ore. - - The Oregon State men's soccer team (6-6-1) rediscovered its winning ways on Sunday when they defeated San Francisco (7-7-2) 1-0 in a non-league match at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium after going winless in its last three matches.
The Beavers will be home this Friday for a 3 p.m. match with No. 1 Stanford and again on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest against No. 6 UCLA.
OSU had several scoring opportunities on the afternoon, and took advantage of a flurry of shots late in the first half to put a score on the board at 35:36 courtesy of Justin Kirk.
Kirk started the action with a blast from 20 yards out on the right wing that was deflected by USF goalkeeper Scott Spaulding, with the ball loose in front of the net, OSU's Aaron McHardy got a foot on it and it was deflected again by a diving Spaulding. Kirk, who was in position after following his original shot, put it in the back of the net for his third goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
'Any time you win and put the ball in the back of the net, it's good,' OSU coach Dana Taylor said. 'We gained some confidence today, but we have to go back to the drawing board and keep working on finishing and gaining more momentum.'
Defensively, the Beavers limited the Dons to six shots on goal, and just 13 overall while shutting out an opponent for the third time this season.
'There had been a pattern developing that we have to get out of, and I think this helped today,' Taylor said of his defense. 'The pattern has been that we're giving up some bad chances defensively and all year, we've been very strong defensively. Today was good, but we still gave up a couple of chances, so we've got to sort some things out. We just have to go back to the drawing board and work on them in practice this week and get stronger.'
OSU goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer had six saves on the afternoon, bringing his season total to 43. Spaulding saved seven shots on the afternoon for USF.
Offensively, McHardy took three shots for the Beavers, while Kirk and Stephen Hensor took two apiece.
'It was good to win at home,' Taylor said. 'The win betters last year's mark (for total wins), so that's a positive step. We've just got to continue to finish strong in these last six games.'
