No. 9 Women's Soccer Blanks No. 14 Stanford, 2-0
Oct. 15, 2000
BERKELEY - The No. 9 California women's soccer team shut out No. 14 Stanford, 2-0, Sunday at Edwards Stadium in front of 1582 fans, which is the largest crowd to see a women's game at the Golden Bears home field. With the win, Cal improved to 12-1-1, 2-1 in the Pac-10, while Stanford dropped to 8-4-1, 1-2 in league play.
The shutout was Cal's eighth of the year and senior goalkeeper Maite Zabala's Cal all-time best 24th of her career.
'Defensively, we played extremely well,' said Cal coach Kevin Boyd. 'The second half we played much better than in the first half. We're struggling with our confidence at the beginning of games against good teams. Once we remembered that we got to be 11-1-1 for a reason, we started playing our game.
'Amy White had her best game all year. Natalie Stuhlmueller began taking over the game in the second half. And, Lee Ann Morton did well against Stanford's Kelsey Carlson, who is an outstanding player.'
Both teams felt each other out for about the first 15 minutes of the game with Stanford controlling the run of play but Cal holding the edge on shots early on. After halftime, the momentum clearly shifted in Cal's favor.
Sophomore All-America candidate Laura Schott put the Bears up 1-0 with her Pac-10-best 18th goal at the 21st minute mark from about four-yards out. Assists were credited to junior forward Kyla Sabo and sophomore midfielder Brittany Kirk.
With the Bears up 1-0 at the half, Schott had what would have been her second goal of the game waved off in the 67th minute due to an offside call. In the 72nd minute, Sabo added an unassisted insurance goal for Cal when she sliced through the young Cardinal defense and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the net.
The Bears outshot the Cardinal 14-9 with most of the Cardinal's shots coming from long range. The game was relatively physical with Cal being whistled for three yellow cards and Stanford for one. Both coaches also stuck with their starters for most of the game, as Cal utilized only two subs and Stanford inserted three.
Cal next hosts Arizona State Friday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m. and Arizona Sunday, at noon.
