Women's Tennis Concludes Play at San Diego Fall Classic

San Diego, Calif. - The University of Oregon women's tennis team concluded the San Diego Fall Classic Sunday, recording victories in every match played.
In the championship match of Flight D singles play, Oregon freshman Courtney Nagle notched a convincing victory over San Diego State's Emilie Auerbrant, 6-0, 6-1. Nagle, a Danville, Calif., native, recorded the Ducks' lone championship victory in singles play. In Flight A, Sophomore Monika Gieczys beat San Diego's Heather Polumbus, 6-0, 6-0, good for a third place finish. And in the consolation match of the same flight, junior Janice Nyland defeated Cindy Amman of UC Santa Barbara in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4.
Flight B saw more of the same as sophomore Jeanette Mattsson beat UC Santa Barbara's Debbie Pepkowitz, 6-2, 6-2, in the consolation championship. In Flight C, the Ducks' Vickie Gunnarson defeated Gaby Andrado of UC Santa Barbara, 6-2, 6-2, while junior Adeline Arnaud recorded a victory over UC Santa Barbara's Sara Fukishima, 6-0, 6-1.
In Flight A doubles action, the Oregon tandem of Nyland and Gunnarson defeated UC Santa Barbara's Amman and Petkowitz, 8-2, and clinched a third place finish. In the consolation championship of the same flight, Nagle and Gieczys beat UC Irvine's Natalie Exon and Amy Tranchino, 8-1. And finally, the Oregon duo of Arnaud and Mattsson, competing in Flight B, defeated Kristine Avendano and Kim Seppi of San Diego State and San Diego, respectively, 8-0.
