Women's Tennis' Moura and Perkins Fall In Third Round Of Riviera Championships

LOS ANGELES - Senior Ana Moura (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and juniorErica Perkins (Seattle) were defeated by Pepperdine's Maren Mueller andDorthee Kurz 6-2, 6-3 in the third pre-qualifying round of doublescompetition at the Riviera Women's All-American Championships, Sunday.
Moura and Perkins defeated the Texas A&M duo Ashley Backus and Kit Carson6-1, 6-4, in the second round of competition, but couldn't get past thePepperdine duo.
'Overall I thought we played good doubles today,' head coach CariGroce said. 'We just missed the last set. I think the other team justout played us.'
Moura and Perkins still may have a chance to advance to the qualifying round.
'We are 99.9 % sure that Ana and Erica will be moving on the qualifyinground as the `Lucky Losers',' Groce said. 'We willfind out for sure on Tuesday morning.'
The Cougars will have a break Monday before the qualifying rounds on Tuesday.
Perkins, who qualified for singles earlier this year, will take onKentucky's Karolina Mayorga Tuesday. While team captain TamaraFilipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) and partner freshman Stacy McKenna (NorthBend, Ore.), who also qualified earlier this year, will take on the UC Irvineduo of Joni Seymour and Darin Chappell in the first qualifying round ofdoubles competition.
Moura and Perkins will have to wait and see if they will be moving on thequalifying round. Their fate should be decided Tuesday.
