Cal Volleyball Travels to No. 4 USC and No. 8 UCLA
Oct. 16, 2000
BERKELEY, CA - HEAD COACH RICH FELLER: Rich Feller (22-22 at Cal, career 321-189, .629) is in his second season as the head coach of Cal's women's volleyball program. Feller took over the Bears coaching reins when he was hired in December 1998. He comes to Cal after a stint as an assistant coach on the USA National Team and 14 successful years as head coach at Colorado State (1983-96) where he led the Rams to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and 12 Top 25 national rankings. Feller earned his 300th career victory when the Bears defeated Denver, 3-1, Sept. 4, 1999.
BEAR NOTES: The 2000 Cal volleyball team (9-7, 4-5) travels to No. 4 ranked USC Thursday and No. 8 ranked UCLA Friday in what is arguably to toughest road trip in the Pac-10. The Bears continue to make a push for postseason play with a 9-7 overall record and a 4-5 Pac-10 mark. Cal is halfway through its conference season and is on pace to better last year's mark of 13-15 overall and 7-11 in the Pac-10. The Bears, who have not been to the NCAA Tournament in women's volleyball since 1989, last week lost at Stanford, 3-0, but rebounded to defeat non-conference opponent William & Mary, 3-1, Oct. 13 at the Recreational Sports Facility. Against William & Mary, the Bears were led by a team-high 20 kills and 20 digs by senior outside hitter Alicia Perry. Perry also had a career-high six total blocks with two block solos and four block assists. Freshman outside hitter Gabrielle Abernathy added 13 kills, sophomore Reena Pardiwala 12 kills and sophomore Leah Young 10 kills. Freshman Ashleigh Turner had three service aces. Senior captain Perry, who was the Oct. 9 Pac-10 Player of the Week after totaling 44 kills and 44 digs against Washington and Washington State, is having an outstanding 2000 season as she leads Cal in both kills (287) and digs (253). Perry has also led Cal in kills and digs in 10 of the Bears 16 matches this season. On the school's all-time career list, she is fifth in career kills (1187), fifth in career kill attempts (3288) and ninth in career digs (991). Among active Pac-10 players, Perry is first in career digs (991) and third in career kills (1187). She needs just nine digs to become only the fourth player in Cal history to record 1000 kills and 1000 digs. Pardiwala is having a solid year after sitting out the 1999 season with a ruptured disk in her lower back. She leads the Cal starters with a .341 hitting percentage (133 kills, 39 errors, 276 attempts). Pardiwala also leads the Bears in block solos (nine), block assists (59) and total blocks (68). She is second on the team in service aces (15) and third in digs (120), as well. Abernathy has had some impressive matches this season and is second on the team with 218 kills, the most kills of any Pac-10 freshman.
CAL VS. THE OPPONENTS: Cal has a 6-27 all-time record against USC (14-1, 8-1, won at ASU, 3-1, Oct. 12 and lost at UA, 3-0, Oct. 13), losing earlier this season, 3-0 Sept. 23 at Cal. The last time the Bears defeated the Trojans was Nov. 15, 1991 (3-2) in Berkeley. USC is led by 6-1 freshman outside hitter April Ross (173 kills, .322 hitting percentage). The Bears have a 0-39 all-time record against UCLA (12-5, 7-2, won at UA, 3-2, Oct. 12, won at ASU, 3-2, Oct. 13), losing earlier this season, 3-1, Sept. 22 at Cal. The Bruins are led by 5-11 junior outside hitter Kristee Porter (216 kills, 116 digs).
