WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Quarterback Joey Harrington of Oregon, safety Nnamdi Asomugha of California and special teams performer Gary Love of Arizona have been named Pac-10 Players of the Week in football.
Harrington, a junior from Portland, Ore., directed Oregon to a 28-17 road win at USC. Harrington completed 27 of 42 passes (.667) for a career-high 382 yards and four touchdowns. His four TD passes were spread around to four different receivers. Harrington directed the Duck offense to 25 first first downs, 382 yards passing and 499 yards total offense.
Asomugha, a sophomore from Los Angeles, Calif., came up with some big plays in California's 46-38 triple overtime upset win against No. 13-ranked UCLA. Asomugha was credited with seven tackles, four unassisted, and two big plays. He intercepted a pass and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown and later came up with a pass deflection in the end zone which save a touchdown on a fourth-and-goal play. The California defense limited UCLA to 45 yards rushing and intercepted three passes.
Love, a freshman from Los Angeles, Calif., had a busy day on special teams in Arizona's 53-47 triple overtime win against Washington State. Love returned six kickoffs for 126 yards (21.0), with a long of 37 yards, and had two tackles on kick coverage.
Also nominated for offensive player of the week honors were tailbacks Joe Igber of California, Rich Alexis of Washington and Sultan McCullough of USC, quarterbacks Jonathan Smith of Oregon State and Ortege Jenkins of Arizona and split end Nakoa McElrath of Washington State. Others nominated on defense were linebackers Matt Smith of Oregon, Solomon Bates of Arizona State and Raonall Smith of Washington State and backs Terrance Carroll of Oregon State, Omare Lowe of Washington, Michael Jolivette of Arizona and Troy Polamalu of USC. Punter Ryan Fleming of Washington and placekicker Ryan Cesca of Oregon State were nominated for special teams play.
