Duck Men's Cross Country Ranked 13th This Week

Oct. 17, 2000

EUGENE - The University of Oregon men's cross country climbed in this week's national coach's poll to 13th, while the Duck women fell out of the rankings for the first time this season.

The Duck men climbed from an 18th-place ranking the previous week after a strong finish at the Iowa State Memorial Classic last Saturday. In the Pre-NCAA invite, the Ducks finished eighth in the 53-team field with 382 points and beat seven of the 14 teams that came in ranked among the national top 25. Sophomore Jason Hartmann (30th, 31:35.2) and senior Michael Kasahun (36th, 31:41.0) paced the team up front.

On the women's side, the Ducks fell out of the rankings after being tabbed 22nd in last week's rankings. The squad didn't fare as well in the crowded, 325-finisher field which experienced problems assigning places and times when finishers were backed up 30 meters before the actual finish line. As a unit, the Ducks took 21st with 642 points in the 56-team field, including 16 top-25 teams. Senior Hanna Smedstad led the team individually (35th, 21:55.7).

The Duck men's and women's teams look forward to a week off from action before traveling to Seattle for the Pac-10 Championships, Oct. 28 in Lincoln Park.
