PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - University of Oregon women's tennis player Monika Gieczys split her two matches Tuesday at the ITA All-American Championship.
Gieczys, a sophomore from Sopot, Poland, lost in the first round to Dee Dee Herring of Southern Methodist, 6-3, 6-2. She then rebounded to defeat Pepperdine's Charlotte Vernaz 6-1, 6-4 in the back draw of the tournament, which features the top 75 singles players in Division I college tennis.
'She had a real good second match,' fifth-year Oregon coach Jack Griffin. 'She didn't play her best at first, but she learned from it. A lot of good players are here, so any time you're winning matches, it's good.'
Gieczys, who won the second most singles matches for the Ducks last year, will play Lauren Barnikow of Stanford Wednesday at 9 a.m.
