Bears Don't Qualify in ITA All-American
Oct. 18, 2000
LOS ANGELES, CA -
Women's ITA All-American Championships
Qualifying Rounds, Riviera Country Club
The field of 64 singles players must win three matches in order to advance to the main draw of the tournament October 19-22.
In the qualifying rounds, Cal entered three players. Sophomore Christina Fusano defeated Bianca Posada of Tulsa 7-6(4), 6-4. Needing two more wins to advance, Fusano fell short, however, losing her next match to Lindsay Blau of Arizona.
Two of the Bear's freshmen were also trying to advance to the main draw of the tournament. Jieun Jacobs, who played well at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational two weeks ago, got past her first opponent, Megan Dunigan of Furman. Just like Fusano, however, Jacobs couldn't snag a win in her second match, losing to Paola Palencia of Pepperdine 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Fellow freshman, Raquel Kops-Jones, playing in her first tournament of the year as a Bear lost in the first round to Alex Durska of Tulsa.
In the PreQualifying rounds, which took place October 14-15, freshman Nicole Havlicek, who won the ASU Thunderbird Invitational's first round consolation championship, failed to make it to the qualifying rounds. She retired to Sarah Witten of Kentucky due to a strained muscle.
