Washington State Women's Tennis Returns Home

LOS ANGELES -- The WSU women's tennis team is on their way home aftersuffering some tough losses in the Rivera All-American Championships, Tuesday.
Junior Erica Perkins (Seattle) downed Carolina Mayorga of Kentucky, 6-3, 6-3,in the first qualifying round of competition. Perkins was then eliminatedfrom the tournament after suffering a loss to Arizona State's Megan Yeats4-6, 6-7 (4) in the second round.
'We were very pleased with Erica's play,' head coach Cari Groce said. 'Hersecond round was extremely tough. She played great singles.'
Team captain Tamara Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) and partner freshmanStacy McKenna (North Bend, Ore.) suffered a tough loss, 1-6, 5-7, to UCIrvine's duo of Seymour and Chappell in the first qualifying round of doublescompetition.
Perkins and senior Ana Moura (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), who found themselvesin the draw Tuesday morning, were also defeated in the first round ofcompetition. The UCLA duo of Fisher and Marinova defeated the Cougar duo7-5, 6-1.
'Next to the NCAA tournament, this is one of the toughest tournaments in thecountry,' Groce said. 'All the players here are tough. Doubles may not havegone as well as it could have, but we played tough tennis. I think it was agood opportunity for these four girls to get some tough matches under theirbelts. I am looking forward to the ITA Regionals next month. These playersare only getting better, and the players back home are training very hard.They are excited about the regionals and so am I.'
The Cougars will travel to Palo Alto, Calif. to compete in The ITA RegionalsNovember 9-12
