PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Washington senior Kristina Kraszewski was one of three lofty seeds to fall during the first round of the Women's All-American Championships Thursday at the Riviera Tennis Club.
The tournament's No. 3 seed, Kraszewski suffered a three-set loss to Notre Dame's Michelle Dasso. Kraszewski lost the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (4) before claiming a 7-6 (5) tiebreaker victory in the second. Dasso captured the decisive third set 6-1.
Kraszewski is ranked No. 4 among NCAA women's competitors in the WingspanBank.com national singles rankings. She finished the 2000 NCAA season as the nation's sixth-ranked competitor.
Two other players seeded among the top-four lost, No. 2 seed Sara Walker of UCLA was upset by Baylor's Jahnavi Parekh and No. 4 Adria Engel of Arizona State lost to Ohio State's Kristy Dascoli.
The second leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Grand Slam, the Riviera All-American Championships are considered the toughest hardcourt event of the fall season. The 18th-annual tournament features a 32-player singles bracket and 16-team doubles draw.
Kraszewski was one of 24 players who received automatic berths to the singles bracket. Eight other players filled out the field after advancing through a qualifying tournament earlier this week.
Several other Huskies were in action this past week during prequalifying and qualifying tournaments. Freshman Claire Carter advanced to the third round of the prequalifying tournament at UCLA, winning matches over Wisconsin's April Gabler (6-3, 6-2) and Stacy McKenna of Washington State (3-6, 6-4, 6-4). Carter was defeated 6-1, 6-2 by Ana Radeljevic and failed to advance to the qualifying bracket.
Two UW singles competitors reached the second round of the qualifying tournament. Sophomore Darija Klaic defeated Katja Kovac of Baylor 7-6 (5), 6-2 before losing to North Carolina'a Julie Rotundi 6-0, 6-4. Junior Ilona Kordonskaya beat Martina Nedorostova of Texas A&M 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 before falling to No. 2 seed Delphine Troch of William & Mary 6-1, 6-4.
The doubles team of Kraszewski and Klaic came within one match of reaching the main draw before losing 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 to Hedberg and Roland from Texas A&M. The UW doubles tandem beat a twosome from USC 7-6, 7-6 (1) in the first round before dispatching a Fresno State duo 6-3, 6-3 in the second round.
The Washington women's tennis team next competes in the ITA Regionals that run from Nov. 9-12 at Stanford.
