Women's Volleyball Downs Stanford 3-0

LOS ANGELES - The eighth-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team completed its first season sweep of Stanford since 1993 on Thursday night, posting a 3-0 win. Game scores were 15-2, 15-9, 15-6. With the victory, the Bruins improve to 13-5, 8-2 in the Pac-10 Conference, while Stanford falls to 11-7, 5-5 Pac-10.
UCLA made quick work of the first game of the match, sprinting out of the gate with 11 kills on 15 attacks with just two errors for a .600 attack percentage. Meanwhile, Stanford accumulated just five kills in the game and hit -.091 as a team. UCLA was up 6-0 before Stanford scored its first point of the game, and was up 14-1 before the Cardinal scored its second and final point of the game.
Game two was much closer, with seven ties before either team scored its 10th point. From that point, the Bruins rattled off four quick points to take a 13-9 lead, and closed out the match on the service of Michelle Quon, with a kill from Kristee Porter. At the break, the Bruins were up 2-0 with a 15-9 game two win. UCLA was hitting .396 as a team, while Stanford was at .123.
In game three, it was close early, with three ties up to the 6-6 mark. From there, the Bruins put together another string of solid play, posting nine unanswered points to take the game and the match with a15-6 win.
For the match, UCLA topped Stanford in every statistical category, leading in attack percentage (.378/.120), kills (39/31), digs (25/19), blocks (8/5) and service aces (10-2). Individually, no Bruin reached double-figure kills, as the offense was spread between several players. Porter and Lauren Fendrick led the way with nine kills apiece, followed by Elisabeth Bachman with eight. Bachman also led the Bruins in blocks with four (1 solo, 3 assists).
UCLA returns to action on Friday night for a Pac-10 match against Cal. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion. The game will be broadcast live on www.uclabruins.com with Lou Riggs, Paul Nihipali and Michael Sondheimer calling the action.
