No. 2 Men's Soccer Downs Oregon State 2-1
Oct. 20, 2000
STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford senior midfielder Sean Sylvis snapped a 1-1 tie with a header at the 86:12 mark as the second-ranked Cardinal men's soccer team defeated Oregon State 2-1 in a Pacific-10 Conference match in Corvallis, Ore.
Stanford, which has won four straight, improves to 12-1-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the Pac-10. Oregon State falls to 6-7-1 and 0-3-1.
Sylvis' goal came just a minute after Oregon State had tied the match at 1-1. Sophomore defender Todd Dunivant, streaking down the left sideline, sent a cross to Sylvis, who headed it in for his second game-winner of the season.
The Cardinal, which improved to 3-0-1 on the road, got on the scoreboard first and held the lead for much of the match. At 19:15, senior midfielder Matt Moses sent a cross from the left side that deflected to Luke Rust. The senior forward then slotted a shot past the Oregon State goalkeeper for his ninth goal of the year, a new career high.
Oregon State trailed 1-0 until the 85:13 mark, when the Beavers scored the equalizer off a counter-attack. James Albert struck a shot from 15 yards out that deflected off a Stanford defender and past Cardinal keeper Adam Zapala.
Stanford continues its Pacific Northwest swing on Sunday, Oct. 22, when the Cardinal travels to Seattle to face No. 4-ranked Washington. The game is a rematch of the Oct. 6 battle at New Maloney Field, won by the Huskies 2-1 in overtime.
