UCLA Women's Varsity Wins Titan CC Invite

UCLA won the women's team title with it's varsity squad and the Bruin men's'B' team placed second at the Titan Cross Country Invitational, held Friday onthe campus of CS Fullerton. Individually, UCLA senior Christina Bowen won thewomen's 5000m event, even though senior teammate Katie Nuanes finished with thesame time and in the men's 8000m race, Bruin junior Justin Patananan was thefirst collegiate finisher.
The Bruin women's varsity won their team event (six squads competing) with24 points, followed by second-place Concordia (44), third-place UC Irvine 'B'(60), fourth-place UC Santa Barbara 'B' (124), fifth-place Pepperdine (143) andsixth-place CS Fullerton 'B' (153).
Individually, Bowen, from Danville, placed first over the 5000m course witha time of 17:35.3. It's the fifth time this season (out of six meets) that Bowenhas been the Bruins' top runner. Earlier this year, she won the collegiatetitles at the CS Fullerton and Aztec Invites.
Nuanes placed second, even though she finished with the same time as Bowen.The Bruins also placed seventh, eighth and ninth in the overall individualwomen's race ' sophomore Melissa McBain was seventh (18:08.6), sophomore JuliaBarbour was eighth (18.10.6) and senior Gina Donnelly was ninth (18:17.7).UCLA's other runners were junior Alynda Franco (18th, 18:52.3), freshmanTiffany Burgess (21st, 19:07.0) and freshman Jessica Marr (24th, 19.16.5).
In the men's team competition, the Bruin 'B' team placed second, with 56points, behind winner USC, with 36 points. Rounding out the six-team field werethird-place UC Santa Barbara 'B' (61), fourth-place CS Fullerton 'B' (105),fifth-place Concordia (120) and sixth-place Pepperdine (134). The UCLA men'svarsity squad is training through the weekend and not competing in aninvitational.
Patananan, from Palmdale, was the first collegiate men's finisher over the8000m course, in a time of 24:55.5. The overall men's winner was Ramon Serratos(Puma), in a time of 24:34.
Bruin junior Andrew Wulf finished in the top five, placing fourth in25:13.4. UCLA had two other runners in the overall top 20, sophomore Phil Youngin 19th place (26:07.4) and junior Martin Brix in 20th (26:08.3). UCLA's otherrunner was senior Jonathan Lee, in 32nd (27:21.8).
UCLA's two most important meets of the season are upcoming for the Bruinwomen's and men's varsity squads ' Oct. 28 at the Pacific-10 Championships inSeattle, WA and Nov. 11 at the NCAA Western Regional Qualifying in Fresno.
