Oct. 20, 2000
SEATTLE, Wash. - Vanessa Pierce's goal at 56:12 proved to be the game-winner Friday as the No. 3 Washington Huskies defeated the No. 10 USC Trojans, 1-0, at Husky Soccer Stadium in a Pac-10 Conference match. Pierce penetrated the USC defense on a corner kick by Caroline Putz and knocked in her third goal of the season. With the win, Washington improves to 14-1 on the season and 5-0 in Pac-10 play while USC falls to 10-3-2 overall, 2-1-1 in Pac-10 play.
This was the first time this season that the Trojans have been shut out and also the first time they have lost two matches in a row.
It was also the first loss suffered by USC goalkeeper Lauren Arase this season and in her career. Despite making three saves and playing strong, Arase now drops to 7-1-2 this season and 14-1-2 in her career.
The Trojans controlled the first half, but were unable to take advantage as they recorded six straight shots on goal with saves by Washington goalkeeper Hope Solo. The Huskies rallied with a strong 15 minutes in the second half, which produced the Pierce goal.
'We just have to find a way to win,' said USC Head Coach Jim Millinder. 'We dominated the first half, but they just beat us near post on the goal. Washington is a very organized team. Our team played hard and extremely well, but we have a big match on Sunday against Washington State.'
USC will wrap up its three-game road trip on Sunday (Oct. 22) at Washington State.
