Cougars Defeated In Campbell Cup Regatta
Oct. 21, 2000
CHELAN, Wash.-- - In the battle for the Campbell Cup, the Washington State woman's rowing team opened up their fall season Saturday by dropping a pair of varsity eight 1200 meter races to the University of Washington at Lake Chelan's Don Morse Park.
Both teams had to contend with a head wind in the day's first race, the varsity eight competition. An even battle ensued for the first 45 seconds, but it was the Huskies that pulled away in the end clocking a time of 4:05.1, bettering the Cougars' 4:12.7.
In the days' second race, pitting the two school's second eight boats, the wind subsided accounting for faster times from both teams. However, the Huskies once again prevailed posting a time of 3:56.9 to the Cougars' 4:02.3.
'I was disappointed in the outcome,' said WSU head coach Tammy Crawford. 'The athletes were disappointed. We know what it is that we need to do more effectively and the next step will be to take accountability for those changes.'
The Cougars return to action next Saturday in a three-mile event at Gonzaga. The race will be a head-to-head matchup with the Bulldogs, who opened up their fall season with a victory Saturday at the Head of Spokane Regatta.
A rematch with the Huskies is also on the horizon as the Cougars travel to Seattle, November 12, for the Head of the Lake at Montlake Cut. Among the teams the Cougars will face in addition to the Huskies, will be Oregon State, California, Stanford and San Diego State.
