Volleyball Sweeps UC Riverside

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Gina Schmidt hit .522 with a match-high 13 kills to lead the Oregon State volleyball team to a 15-1, 15-8, 15-7 sweep over UC Riverside at Gill Coliseum on Saturday.
The Beavers, who hit .337 as a team, improved to 15-7 on the season. UC Riverside, a former Division II power competing at the Division I level for the first time, dropped to 2-17.
'I was very pleased with the energy level we had today,' said coach Nancy Somera. 'We came in focused on getting back to our style of play.'
Hannaford and Hartman each had a match-high nine digs to lead their respective teams. No other players had more than six digs.
UCR scored the first point of the match on a Beaver hitting error, but OSU then scored the next 15 points to win the first game. The Highlanders managed to get several sideouts butcould never score. OSU hit an impressive .519 in that first game, with 16 kills and two errors in 27 tries.
Game two was tied, 2-2, when the Beavers went on a 9-2 run to take an 11-4 lead, but the Highlanders came back with a run of their own. Nikki Neuburger's service error gave UCR a sideout, and the Highlanders responded with a kill from Rosanna Parizek and two from Moana Tuipala to make it 11-7. Two sideouts later, UCR scored again on another Parizek kill, but the Beavers took over from there. OSU scored the final four points on an ace from Lori Daedelow and three consecutive hitting errors by Hartman.
The Beavers found themselves down, 6-3, in game three. Shirley picked up a kill for a sideout, and the Beavers scored four straight points off another Shirley kill and three UCR errors. OSU extended its lead to 11-6 and eventually prevailed, 15-7, to close out the match.
