Oct. 22, 2000
STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman forward Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) had two goals and an assist while Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA) netted her second game-winner this weekend to lead the No. 20-ranked Stanford women's soccer team past Arizona State 4-2 in a Pacific-10 Conference match at New Maloney Field.
With the victory, Stanford is now 10-4-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the Pac-10, marking the 13th consecutive year the program has reached the 10-win plateau. Arizona State falls to 11-5-0 and 2-4-0.
Stanford jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two goals in a three-minute span midway through the first half. At the 17:33 mark, the Cardinal converted off a corner kick when Ward sent a pass to sophomore Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA), who knocked in a header from ten yards out. Three minutes later, Ward took a through ball from defender Alison Pabon (Dallas, TX) and slotted a shot to the far post.
Arizona State cut the deficit in half just :30 seconds before halftime when Stacey Tullock corralled a loose ball and scored. Stanford, however, answered back eight minutes into the second stanza when Carlson drilled a shot past Sun Devil goalkeeper Erin Reinke for a 3-1 lead.
The Sun Devils again got within one goal at the 64:55 mark. Jaclyn Smith beat a defender down the right sideline and sent a cross to Antoinette Marjanovich, who found the back of the net to the far post. At 80:08, Ward provided the final 4-2 margin when she beat a defender one-on-one and scored her second goal of the match.
Both keepers were tested all day, as Stanford took 15 shots while Arizona State had 14. Cardinal senior goalie Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR) finished with six saves while Reinke also had six, including five in the second half.
Stanford is next in action on Friday, Oct. 27, when the Cardinal travels to UCLA for a 7:30 p.m. match with the Bruins.
