WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Quarterback Jonathan Smith and placekicker Ryan Cesca of Oregon State and defensive end Saul Patu of Oregon have been named Pac-10 Players of the Week in football.
Smith and Cesca played key roles in Oregon State's come-from-behind 44-38 upset win of No. 23-ranked UCLA at the Rose Bowl.
Smith, a junior from Glendora, Calif., completed 23 of 37 passes (.622) for 351 yards and four touchdown passes of 8, 50, 13 and 4 yards to four different receivers. Smith directed the Oregon State offense that piled up 31 first downs, 604 yards total offense, including 253 yards rushing and 351 yards passing, averaged 6.7 yards per play and converted 12 of 18 third-down conversion attempts.
Cesca, a sophomore from Manhattan Beach, Calif., converted three-of-three field goal attempts with all of the successful boots coming in the fourth quarter of Oregon State's comeback against UCLA. Cesca connected from 32, 31 and 44 yards. He also was successful on all five of his PAT attempts to extend his career PAT record to a perfect 67-67.
Patu, a senior from Seattle, Wash., keyed Oregon's defense in the Ducks' 14-10 win against No. 21-ranked Arizona. Patu was credited with seven tackles, four unassisted, including four tackles for losses of minus-22 yards, 2.5 of which were quarterback sacks (-18). The Oregon defense limited Arizona to 11 first downs, 17 yards rushing, 217 yards total offense, just 2-16 on third-down conversion attempts and posted eight quarterback sacks.
Also nominated for offensive player of the week honors were wide receivers DeRonnie Pitts of Stanford and Marcus Williams of Washington State, tailbacks Tom Pace of Arizona State, Maurice Morris of Oregon and Sultan McCullough of USC and quarterbacks Marques Tuiasosopo of Washington and Ortege Jenkins of Arizona. Others nominated on defense were linebackers Adam Archuleta of Arizona State, John Klotsche of California and Anthony Kelley of Washington and safties Billy Newman of Washington State and Brandon Nash of Arizona. Placekickers John Anderson of Washington and David Bell of USC and punter Chris Palic of Arizona were nominated for special teams play.
