Oct. 23, 2000

The UCLA women's golf team captured the San Diego State Fall Classic Monday, and freshman Johanna Andersson won her first individual title.

The UCLA Blue Team won the team title by 30 shots over Colorado State, firing a 54-hole team score of 905. Colorado State took second place at 935, followed by San Diego State at 936 and Northern Arizona at 938.

'This victory gives a tremendous boost to the confidence of our players,' said Head Coach Carrie Leary. 'I'm very proud of the way they played.'

Andersson, from Ystad, Sweden, posted rounds of 68-78-77--223, four-over par, to win by five shots over teammates Melissa Martin and Leilani Bagby, who tied for second place at 228. Sophomore Vivan Phosomran tied for fourth at 229 and sophomore Bridget Dwyer tied for eighth at 233. Andersson's first round, five-under par 68 was the lowest round by a UCLA player this season.

The team title is Leary's second in as many seasons. She guided the Bruins to the team title last season at the Hawaii Rainbow Fall Classic.
