No. 5 Arizona Downs No. 17 Stanford 3-0

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford's Logan Tom tallied a match-high 19 kills but it wasn't enough as No. 5 Arizona defeated No. 17 Stanford 3-0 tonight in Maples Pavilion. Games scores were 16-14, 16-14, 15-5.

The Cardinal falls to 11-9 overall, 5-7 in league play while the Wildcats improve to 18-2 overall, 11-1 in the Pac-10.

With the two teams tied at 2-2 early in the match, Stanford went on a seven point run to post a 9-2 lead on the `Cats. But Arizona would rally to get to 7-10 then tied the game at 11-11 on a Cardinal hitting error. A kill by Logan Tom and a Wildcat error would put Stanford ahead 13-11. Arizona answered with a block and a service ace to tie the game at 13-all. A kill by Michelle Chambers would get the Cardinal to game point but the Wildcats would score three straight points to take game one 16-14.

Arizona took the early 6-3 lead in game two but Stanford would tie the game at 6-6 on a block by Anna Robinson and Jenn Harvey. The game see-sawed back and forth with neither team going up by more than three points. With the game tied 12-12, the fifth tie of the game, the Cardinal would once again reach game point behind the stellar blocking of Jennifer Detmer at 14-12. But Arizona would answer and tied the game at 14-14 on a Stanford hitting error and score the next two points to take game two, 16-14.

The Wildcats dominated game three, hitting .419 for the game while staking the early 8-2 lead. Stanford never recovered as Arizona went on to win the match with a 15-5 victory in game three.

Stanford's Jennifer Detmer notched 14 kills and a match-high eight blocks on the night while freshman setter Anna Robinson contributed 19 assists and six blocks. Middle blocker Jenn Harvey added seven kills and three blocks.

Arizona had four players in double figures in kills, including Allison Napier's team-high 18 kills. Marissa DaLee notched 15 kills while hitting .583 (15-1-24) for the match.

Stanford hosts Arizona State tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in Maples Pavilion in continued league play.

No. 5 Arizona def. No. 17 Stanford, 3-0.
