Oct. 26, 2000
TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State women's soccer team (12-5-0, 3-4-0 Pac-10) kept its unblemished record alive against the University of Arizona (3-12-2, 0-6-1 Pac-10) with a 3-1 victory tonight in front of a school record 712 fans at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The all-time series stands at 6-0.
The Wildcats took an early lead in the 30th minute when Sierra Cristiano lofted the ball over ASU goalkeeper Erin Reinke from 22 yards out. Arizona State then tied the game in the 35th minute when Antoinette Marjanovic dribbled uncontested through the Wildcat defense, shooting the ball pass UA goalkeeper Shannon Monti into the right corner. That would be all of the scoring in the first half as UA lead 5-3 in shots.
However, in the second half, the Sun Devils came out with a much more aggressive front, outshooting the UA 16-1.
Arizona State tallied its second goal, and game-winner in the 71st minute, from freshman Emily Schwimmer. Jaclyn Clark ran down the far sideline and made a beautiful cross to a breaking Schwimmer who netted the ball from 10 yards out. The goal was also the first in Schwimmers career.
ASU would put the game away in the 89th minute when Holly Cohen scored from five yards out in front of the goal. Marjanovic was credited with the assist.
Arizona State outshot Arizona 19-6 and posted seven corner kicks to UA's five. ASU's Reinke only made one save, while UA's tandem of Monti and Inger Airheart collected eight (seven by Airheart in the second half).
Up next, Arizona State will face Big Ten competition as Minnesota comes to Tempe on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. kick off.
