Men's Soccer Stumbles At Cal, 2-0
Oct. 27, 2000
BERKELEY, Calif. - - The Oregon State men's soccer team dropped its Pacific-10 Conference match with the California Golden Bears by a score of 2-0 on Friday afternoon to fall to 7-8-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the conference.
The teams played a scoreless first half before Cal's Kendall Simmonds put two scores on the board in the 69th and 75th minutes of the contest to seal OSU's fate.
Missed marking assignments cost the Beavers on both scores, as Simmonds' first score went far post past diving OSU goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer.
Cal's second score came on a 12-yard chip shot that sailed over Billmeyer's hands. Both goals were assisted by Austin Ripmaster.
'It was a very lackluster game, we didn't look sharp at all,' OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. 'Technically and defensively, we made lots of mistakes. Offensively, we missed quite a few good chances. We just didn't come out with any intensity.'
OSU outshot the Bears (5-9-1, 2-2-1) 12-10, and owned a 4-3 advantage in the corner kick department as well. Justin Kirk had four shots to lead the Beavers, and Billmeyer notched two saves.
'We actually played better in the second half,' Taylor said. 'Both goals came on bad marking assignments. We just didn't work for each other as we have in the past. We have to bounce back Sunday (against Gonzaga).'
OSU hosts the Gonzaga Zags in a 12 noon match at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 29.
