The Oregon State volleyball team had a 2-0 lead heading into the break, but No. 8 UCLA came back to win three straight for a five-game win over the Beavers on Friday night. Game scores were 9-15, 7-15, 15-4, 15-10 and 15-7.
Gina Schmidt led OSU with 22 kills and 19 digs, but UCLA got 30 kills from Kristee Porter and 20 from Elisabeth Bachman to lead the Bruin offense.
Angie Shirley picked up her 1000th career kill with the first of her 14 kills. She became the eight Beaver - and the first since 1997 - to reach that mark. OSU also got double-digit kills from Joscelyn Hannaford (18) and Lori Daedelow (10).
The Beavers (15-9, 5-7 Pacific-10) came out strong, hitting .291 in the first two games. Meanwhile, the Bruins (15-5, 10-2) struggled offensively before the break, hitting just .136 in games one and two.
'(In games one and two) we got back to playing as well as we've played this season. We've been fighting mental fatigue and we challenged them, and I could not be prouder,' said coach Nancy Somera.
It was a different story after the break, as the Bruins hit .447 in game three, .360 in game four and .556 in the decisive fifth game. OSU, on the other hand, hit .217 in game three, .244 in game four and .095 in game five.
'From my perspective, I think we got slower (after the break), but it really didn't matter. We didn't play well in game three, but we bounced back,' said Somera. 'UCLA rotated out a lot, and our team was looking at a different team. We had to get used to seeing the different hitters.'
After dropping the 15-4 decision in game three, OSU found themselves down, 8-3, in game four but rallied to tie the game at 8-8 and then go up, 10-8. But, after three sideouts, UCLA went on a 4-0 run on two kills from Porter and two Beaver hitting errors. OSU picked up a sideout on a kill from Hannaford, but the Bruins regained control off another Porter kill and then scored three straight - including two more off OSU errors - to send the match to a fifth game.
Game five was tied, 5-5, when UCLA went on a 3-0 run and never relinquished the lead. OSU made it 10-7 off a kill from Schmidt, but the Bruins then rattled off the next five points on four kills and an ace for the win.
The Bruins finished the night with 87 kills, with 61 coming after the break. OSU tallied 75 kills for the match. UCLA also outdug OSU, 75-59, but the Beavers won the blocking battle, 12-10.
