Women's Soccer Falls Short In Upset Bid With No. 2 Washington
Oct. 27, 2000
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University's women's soccer team out-shot No. 2 ranked University of Washington 17-15 but the Huskies rallied for a 2-1 double overtime victory in Friday's Pacific-10 conference showdown.
The Huskies improved their overall record to 16-1-0 and maintained a perfect 7-0-0 conference mark while the loss dropped Oregon State to 6-10-2 overall and 0-4-2 in the Pac-10.
Washington got on the board first at the 11:14 mark. Midfielder Caroline Putz dribbled through the Beaver defense, and fired a shot beyond the reach of OSU goalkeeper Jerika Duran to give UW the lead.
Unfazed, OSU knotted the score 1-1 less than five minutes later (15:25) when Leila Kaady found Ann Marie Fallow in the box. Fallow sailed over her defender and headed the ball into the left corner of the goal past UW keeper Hope Solo.
Both teams played evenly throughout the rest of regulation and during the overtime periods. In what looked like what would finish as a tie, Washington ended the game on Suzanne Culpepper's perfect long downfield pass to Theresa Wagner at 116:09. Wagner headed the ball into the net as Duran came out to challenge the play.
'We played toe-to-toe with them, we just weren't able to come out on top,' commented Oregon State head coach Steve Fennah.
OSU finished with six corner kicks compared to the UW's three.
Duran finished with six saves for the Beavers while Solo added six saves for the Huskies.
The Beavers suffered their sixth loss to a nationally ranked opponent but have been competitive in all of the contests.
'It's a step forward for our team and our program. We just haven't seen the reward in the win/loss category,' said Fennah.
Oregon State returns to the field on Sunday when the Beavers wrap up their home schedule against Washington State University in a double-header with the OSU men. The men open action against Gonzaga University at Noon followed by the women's match at 2 p.m.
