BERKELEY, CA - The University of California women's volleyball team (9-11, 4-9) was upended by Arizona State (15-8, 7-6), 3-0 (16-14, 15-3, 15-8), Saturday night at the RSF Fieldhouse on the Cal campus.
The Sun Devils came back from a 12-5 deficit to win game one 16-14 and never looked back, dominating game two, 15-3, and winning game three, 15-8. Arizona State was led by Amanda Burbridge's team-high 22 kills and 14 digs. Michelle Mortensen and Julia Leddy added 15 and 11 kills, respectively. The Bears were paced by senior outside hitter Alicia Perry with a team-high 17 kills and 18 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Reena Pardiwala chipped in 12 kills.
In game one, Cal saw ASU come back from being down 12-5 by scoring nine straight points to lead 14-12. The Bears were able to tie the game, 14-14, on a kill by Pariwala and a kill by Perry, but that was the best Cal was able to do, losing 16-14.
Game two was not close for the Bears, but Cal made a run in game three. Down, 4-1, the Bears went on a 7-0 run to take a 8-4 advantage with the help of a kill by sophomore Leah Young, three block assists by Pardiwala, a kill by Pardiwala and a kill by freshman Jenna Grigsby. However, that was about the highlight for Cal in game three as it lost the game and the match, 15-8.
The Bears will next travel to Washington State, Thursday, Nov. 2 and Washington, Friday, Nov. 3. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
