UCLA Women, Men Place Sixth At Pac-10 Cross Country Meet

SEATTLE - Eric Peterson's UCLA women's and men's cross country teams on Saturdayplaced sixth at the 2000 Pacific-10 Cross Country meet, held in Seattle andhosted by the University of Washington. Stanford, rated No. 2 in the U. S. inwomen's rankings and No. 3 in the men's, swept both team titles.
In the women's team standings, Stanford won with 51 points, followed by No. 4Arizona State (second-place, 67), No. 8 Arizona (third-place, 79), No. 6Washington (fourth-place, 83), fifth-place Washington State (124), sixth-placeUCLA (134), seventh-place Oregon (140), eighth-place USC (226) and ninth-placeCalifornia (254).
Held at Lincoln Park in Seattle, the women's 6000m race was won by Arizona'sTara Chaplin, in a time of 20:10.67. UCLA's top finishers were senior KatieNuanes, who placed 12th, in a time of 21:11.23 and senior Christina Bowen, whowas 14th, in 21:15.40.
UCLA's women scoring finishers were sophomore Kelly Grimes (31st, 22:01.99),junior Bridie Hatch (38th, 22:25.46) and sophomore Melissa McBain (39th,22:30.10). Also running for the Bruin women were senior Gina Donnelly (48th,22:56.07) and sophomore Julia Barbour (49th, 22:59.21)
In the men's team race, Stanford won with 21 points, followed by No. 13Oregon (second-place, 66), No. 10 Arizona (third-place, 70), fourth-placeArizona State (114), fifth-place Washington (117), sixth-place UCLA (142),seventh-place Washington State (190) and eighth-place California (195).The men's 8000m race was won by Stanford's Jonathon Riley, in a time of23:39.59. UCLA's top finisher was junior Bryan Green, placing eighth in a timeof 23:57.57. Green has placed in the Top 10 of every UCLA men's meet (five) thisseason.
UCLA's men scoring finishers were senior Paul Muite (23rd, 24:31.50), freshmanJon Rankin (24th, 24:32.28), junior Justin Patananan (42nd, 25:12.60) and juniorAndrew Wulf (45th, 25:16.46). The Bruins' other men's runners were senior ScottAbbott (46th, 25:36.05), and senior Mason Moore (47th, 25:37.32).
UCLA's next meet is the NCAA West Regional Qualifying, set for Nov. 11 inFresno. Qualified teams and individuals will then advance to the 2000 NCAACross Country Championships, held in Ames, IA on Nov. 20.
