Men's Soccer Blanked By Cardinal
Oct. 29, 2000
Berkeley, Calif. - The California men's soccer team was blanked Sunday afternoon to the No. 2 Stanford Cardinal, 3-0, the same result as the last time these two teams met on Oct. 15. With the loss, the Bears fall to 5-10-1 overall, 2-3-1 in the Pac-10. Stanford improves to 14-1-1, 5-1 in conference.
The Cardinal got on the board in the 12th minute when Scott Leber took a shot from 12-yards out to the near post, past a diving Cal keeper Marco Palmieri. Matt Moses and Lee Morrison assisted on the shot.
The Moses to Leber combination worked again in the 48th minute. Moses took a corner-kick on the near side, and sent the ball towards the goal, where it met Leber who proceeded to head the ball into the back of the net.
Stanford put the finishing touches on the Bears in the 62nd minute. Corey Woolfolk took a breakaway down the center of the field and passed off to Roger Levesque who scored the third and final goal on the day.
'Today was a very difficult match for our team, said first-year head coach Kevin Grimes. 'We had a good win on Friday against Oregon State. Stanford had the day off on Friday. Their fresh legs and energy level was the difference in the match today.'
Cal keeper Palmieri tallied a game-high eight saves. Cardinal keeper Adam Zapala stopped two Cal shots, and added another shutout to his conference best, giving him 11 on the season.
The Bears are now 4-2 at home and continues their home schedule with a 2:30 p.m. match on Saturday against the San Jose State Spartans as part of the Fourth Annual California adidas-Legacy Classic. Stanford and the Indiana Hoosiers open the tournament with a noon match on Saturday. Sunday, California takes on Indiana at 3 p.m.
