Stanford Freshmen Shine At ITA Men's Tennis Regional Championships
Oct. 29, 2000
PLEASANTON, Calif. - Stanford freshmen Eduardo Cardoso (Brasilia, Brazil/Palmer HS) and Joseph Kao (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills HS) both made impressive collegiate debuts in the opening day of action in the ITA Regional Championships on Saturday.
Because of rain in the Bay Area, opening round play was moved to Club Sport Pleasanton late Saturday. And instead of the opening two rounds of competition, only the first round was played. Competition will resume on Sunday in Berkeley - weather-permitting - with second and third round action in singles and doubles. If the weather does not hold, play will be moved to the San Francisco Tennis Club late in the day.
In action that was completed on Saturday, Cardoso prevailed in opening round singles play and teamed up with Kao to win a first round doubles match. Eight of Stanford's nine other singles entrants received a first round bye.
In singles competition, Cardoso was an easy 6-1, 6-0 winner over Marc Mowrer of Saint Mary's. And on the doubles side, Cardoso and Kao knocked Christian Dyvik and Mike Munson of San Francisco into the consolation bracket with an 8-3 pro-set victory. Stanford's three other doubles teams received first round byes.
